Pleistocene - Holocene volcanism at the Karkar geothermal prospect, Armenia

چکیده

Quaternary volcanic centres north of the Bitlis-Zagros suture in Turkey, Iran and Caucasus represent both hazards potential or actual geothermal energy resources. Such challenges opportunities cannot be fully quantified without understanding these volcanoes' petrogenesis, geochronology magmatic, tectonic other eruption triggers. In this preliminary study, we discuss age geology Karkar monogenetic field Syunik, SE Armenia. The ~70 km2 is close to Armenia's only test drilling site. Fissure-fed trachybasaltic andesite trachyandesite lavas erupted on a trans-tensional segment Syunik branch Pambak-Sevan-Syunik Fault, where previous studies suggested Holocene for youngest eruptions. Here, high-resolution duplicate 40Ar/39Ar dating 7 groundmass separates provided inverse isochron ages ranging from 7.4 ± 3.6 ka 7.9 2.9 353 20 (2σ). Each lava flow displays petrographic whole rock geochemical patterns consistent with melting subduction-modified lithospheric mantle extensive evolution within crust involving fractional crystallisation mixing magma batches. Data confirm that activity related Fault overlapped Palaeolithic Bronze Age human occupation remains minor inundation hazard. Further work will allow constraint depth timescales storage. Both area around Porak volcano, which lies 35 km N might considered future developments.

Spatial distribution of Pleistocene/Holocene warming amplitudes in Northern Eurasia inferred from geothermal data

We analyze 48 geothermal estimates of Pleistocene/Holocene warming amplitude from various locations in Greenland, Europe, Arctic regions of Western Siberia, and Yaku-tia. The spatial distribution of these estimates exhibits two remarkable features. (i) In Europe and part of Asia the amplitude of warming increases towards northwest and 5 displays clear asymmetry with respect to the North Pole. T...

Geothermal Features of Armenia: a Country Update

Sixty heat flow values ranging from 38 to 157 mW/m have been estimated for Armenia from geothermal gradient determinations in 90 locations and a limited number of thermal conductivity determinations. The highest values of heat flow (90-157 mW/m) occur in the central part of the country, which is characterized by vigorous Quaternary volcanic activity, manifestations of thermal springs, intensive...

Climate-Human interaction over the Iranian Plateau during the Upper Pleistocene-Holocene: A review

During the past two decades an array of studies have shed light on potential links between the evolution of Hominids as well as Human dispersal out of Africa and episodes of abrupt climate change. Although archaeological evidences suggest that anatomically modified humans appeared in Africa between 200 and 150 ky ago, the timing of the early humans migration out of Africa remained unclear. Stra...

A pulse of mid-Pleistocene rift volcanism in Ethiopia at the dawn of modern humans

The Ethiopian Rift Valley hosts the longest record of human co-existence with volcanoes on Earth, however, current understanding of the magnitude and timing of large explosive eruptions in this region is poor. Detailed records of volcanism are essential for interpreting the palaeoenvironments occupied by our hominin ancestors; and also for evaluating the volcanic hazards posed to the 10 million...

Holocene-Late Pleistocene Climatic Ice Core

Three ice cores to bedrock from the Dunde ice cap on the north-central QinghaiTibetan Plateau ofChina provide a detailed record of Holocene and Wisconsin-Wurm late glacial stage (LGS) climate changes in the subtropics. The records reveal that LGS conditions were apparently colder, wetter, and dustier than Holocene conditions. The LGS part of the cores is characterized by more negative 8180 rati...
